The Power of Your Thoughts and Words

"Our thoughts are the decorations inside the sanctuary where we live… Your thoughts pretty much decide the mood, weather, and climate inside your heart, and God considers your thoughts a part of you." — A.W. Tozer

What an incredible thought! The things we allow to occupy our minds eventually shape the atmosphere of our hearts. And what fills our hearts will eventually find its way out of our mouths.

Our thoughts inform our faith, and our words reveal what we believe.

In Mark 2, Jesus was teaching in a house overflowing with people when four men arrived carrying their paralyzed friend. Unable to get through the crowd, they climbed onto the roof, made an opening, and lowered him directly in front of Jesus.

The Bible tells us that when Jesus saw their faith, He responded.

But something else was happening in that room.

The religious leaders were questioning Jesus' authority. They weren't speaking their doubts aloud. They were thinking them. And Jesus responded to what was happening in their hearts.

Isn't that fascinating?

Two groups of people were in the same room, encountering the same Jesus. One group believed He had the power to change a life. The other questioned His authority to do so.

Same room. Same Jesus. Different thoughts. Different responses.

It makes me wonder how many of us are allowing our thoughts to talk us out of the very things God is calling us into.

We think things like:

"I'm not qualified."

"What if it doesn't work?"

"I've been disappointed before."

"Nothing is ever going to change."

And before long, those thoughts become the confessions coming out of our mouths.

We start speaking defeat over situations where God is inviting us to trust Him.

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that death and life are in the power of the tongue.

Our words matter!

In Romans 10:9, Paul connects what we believe in our hearts with what we confess with our mouths. Belief and confession are deeply connected.

Confession is belief from the heart finding its voice.

But here's the challenge: What happens when our mouths are confessing something different from what God's Word declares?

We say we believe God is faithful, but constantly speak as though He's forgotten us.

We say we trust His provision, but allow fear to dominate every conversation about our future.

We say we believe He can heal, restore, and redeem, but rehearse our disappointments more than His promises.

I'm not suggesting we pretend our problems don't exist or that speaking the right words guarantees the outcome we want.

Faith isn't denying reality. It's choosing to give God's truth greater authority than our fear.

I love the honesty of the father in Mark 9:24 who cried out, "I believe; help my unbelief!"

What a powerful confession!

He didn't pretend his faith was perfect. He brought his struggling thoughts to Jesus.

Maybe that's where you need to begin today.

"Lord, I'm afraid, but I trust You."

"Lord, I've been disappointed, but I still believe You're good."

"Lord, I don't understand what You're doing, but I know who You are."

Some of the most powerful confessions aren't declarations of certainty. They're declarations of trust in the middle of uncertainty.

And here's something else I've learned: Your confession isn't just for you.

Your testimony might strengthen someone else's faith. Your willingness to speak about God's goodness might give someone the courage to believe again.

Revelation 12:11 reminds us of the power of the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.

So what are you rehearsing in your mind? What are you repeatedly declaring over your life, your family, and your future?

Maybe it's time to stop giving every fearful thought a microphone.

Fill your mind with His Word. Remind yourself of His faithfulness. And don't be afraid to give your faith a voice.

Because what you continually entertain in your thoughts will eventually influence what you confess with your mouth.

Let your thoughts be filled with truth, your heart anchored in faith, and your mouth overflowing with the goodness of God.

What's one truth about God you need to start speaking over your life today?
